GM Unveils New Electric Chevrolet Blazer

General Motors (NYSE: GM)

revealed its new electric Chevrolet Blazer that is expected to rival the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Tesla Model Y crossover EVs. The automaker says it will be manufacturing the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV at a plant in the northern Mexican city of Ramos Arizpe.

The vehicle represents an important milestone for the Detroit company as it seeks to attract consumers to EVs. Furthermore, the vehicle is set to arrive in dealer showrooms by next summer and will range in price from USD45,000 for a basic level Blazer to USD66,000 for an “SS” performance model.

According to the company, the crossover will be able to go from 0-60 mph in under 4 seconds, in comparison to the Model Y Performance and Mach-E which reach the same speed at around 3.5 seconds.

“We’ve been working on our [Ultium] platform here for a few years. We’ve rolled out a few vehicles at General Motors already with that,” says Scott Bell, Chevrolet’s global VP in an interview. “[The Blazer] will be kind of our first mainstream, very attainable EVs in one of the largest segments in the industry. So we’re feeling — we’re coming in at the marketplace at the right time as we see the consumer demand continue to grow.”

General Motors CEO Mary Barra stated that the company’s EV strategy will be rewarding in the long run, despite being late to the game compared to other automakers.

“To really get to 30%, 40%, 50% EVs being sold, you have to appeal to people that are in that $30,000 to $35,000 price range,” Barra said in an interview with the AP. “We revealed the Silverado earlier this year, large pickup; we just did the Blazer here in a few short weeks probably, a month or so away we’ll talk about the Equinox EV,” Bell says. “These are the largest [segments] in the industry, and to do those is critical to do the volume we aspire to do in the next year or two.”
